Why do you have a sump pump?

A sump pump is installed in a sump pit, or basin which is typically located in the lowest level of the home, often the basement.  The pit collects water that comes from the natural water table level beneath the home, and at times from rainfall, snow melting, or flooding from outside of the home.  The pump discharges the water from the sump pit to the outside of the home into a drainage system in order to take the water away from the home and prevent flooding.  This whole process is necessary to keep the foundation dry, reduce the risk of water entering the basement, and to lower the level of humidity in the home, preventing mold and mildew.
