Yesterday our staff worked to replace an air filter so our customer Maria could get their Air Conditioning turned on for the warm weathered summer ahead of us. Maria searched and searched for a local store where she could buy the perfect sized filter for her unit, and that was also open past 5:00pm. Luckily, she came across us! Maria claimed that when she spoke on the phone with us, we “were very kind, professional, positive, and helpful. Jody made me feel welcome, even though I was there late in the day on a Monday. She even helped me carry my new filter to the car, since I was also carrying my toddler. I noticed the ten rules painted on your wall in the store and I think that your staff is really living up them.” Because our staff was ready to assist her, Maria enjoyed a cool night with her air conditioning on.We are thrilled to have satisfied Maria and that we were able to get everything she needed in time to enjoy her night!

Mature trees add beauty and shade to landscapes, but their roots can cause extensive damage to sewer pipes. Roots grow into the pipes because they like it there! Sewer pipes contain water, nutrients and oxygen–the essential elements for trees to grow. Aside from sewer blockages and backups, tree roots growing inside sewer pipes are one of the most expensive sewer maintenance items experienced by our customers. Because the pipes are buried and out of sight, homeowners usually don’t have any clues to potential problems until it’s too late.

The plumbing experts at A.W.E. can offer a few precautionary steps to ensure sewer blockages don’t get out of control:

• The first sign of a slow-flowing drainage system is a gurgling noise from the toilet bowls. A complete blockage will occur if no actions are taken to remove the roots/blockage.
• Severe root intrusion and pipes that are structurally damaged will require replacement. You should be aware of the location of your sewer laterals and sewer cleanout pipe, and refrain from planting certain types of trees and hedges near the sewer lines.
• Trees should be located more than 10 feet from sewer lines to minimize root intrusion.
• Choose small, slow-growing species with less aggressive root systems, and replace them before they get too large for their planting area.
• Hire a plumber to video your sewer lateral to determine its condition and if any repairs are needed, which typically costs $250.
• Once roots are in your lateral they will likely cause an eventual blockage. The best way to prevent this is to schedule regular cleaning of your sewer lateral. This is done through an Outside Cleanout Install, which is a great way to maintain an old sewer line, or one that just tends to back up on occasion. It provides a more thorough cleaning and allows the work to be done from outside versus dragging a large machine into the living space of your home. The cost of an Outside Cleanout Install varies depending on the degree of the damage, but the costs ranges from $600 to $5,000.
• Consider hiring a licensed plumber to help stop the growth of tree roots through sewer rodding. This is a process where tree roots are removed by way of a power rodder that cuts and shreds roots and flushes excess roots. A.W.E. uses a root growth inhibitor that can stop the roots from immediately growing back. This process stunts the growth and does not harm the tree. A standard sewer rodding can vary from $350 to $500.

Like much of the greater Chicago area, Terry & Marlys of Woodridge experienced major flooding on April 18th. Even though we were receiving many calls in the area, we made sure to get our technicians to each and every home in a timely manner. We received a call from Terry & Marlys and our Sales Technician John made it to their home on Friday – the very next day – to guide them and recommend the best service for what they needed. They were very pleased with our speed in scheduling the appointment and our natural tendencies of treating them with courtesy and respect.

On Monday, Steve and Randy headed to Terry & Marlys’s home to install a new water heater and furnace. They were both very impressed with how easily Steve & Randy were able to work within the tightly cramped space that they furnace and water heater fit, as our technicians had to rearrange some of the plumbing. We will do anything to get the job done right!

One of our technicians Anthony went to their house the following Friday to make sure everything was done properly and that Terry & Marlys were completely satisfied. He also provided them with a new thermostat, which they said they were extremely thankful for.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May to increase public awareness of electrical hazards.
